About Us

 

The Irish Quiz Organisation (IQO) oversees competitive quizzing in Ireland, particularly the organisation of the Irish heat of the World Quizzing Championships and maintaining the Irish quiz rankings which determine the teams for the European Quizzing Championships and Celtic Nations Quizzing Championship.

 

The 2016 AGM was held in Dublin in April 2016, and the current committee is:

June 2012: IQO created at Irish leg of the 2012 World Quizzing Championships, in Athlone

 

March 2013: Ran first 'Open' event (Dublin Open)

May 2013: Sent teams to first Celtic Nations Quizzing Championship in Edinburgh

June 2013: IQO's John O'Sullivan interviewed on RTE Radio 1 by Miriam O'Callaghan

June 2013: Hosted Irish leg of the 2013 World Quizzing Championships

October 2013: Ran first 'Open' outside Dublin, in Tullamore, Co. Offaly

November 2013: Sent teams to the European Quizzing Championships in Liverpool

 

February 2014: Ran charity table quiz, raising €1,300 for the Society of St Vincent de Paul

March 2014: Ran first 'Irish Open'

April 2014: Hosted second annual Celtic Nations Quizzing Championship

November 2014: Sent team to the European Quizzing Championships in Bucharest

 

March 2015: Ran second 'Irish Open'

April 2015: Ireland finished second for first time at Celtic Nations Quizzing Championships

September 2015: Launched the inaugural Dublin Quiz League

November 2015: Finished fifth in the European Quizzing Championships in Rotterdam

 

January 2016: Ran our second Dublin Quiz League

April 2016: Ireland won the Celtic Nations Quizzing Championships for the first time

 

April 2017: Hosted Celtic National Quizzing Championships for the second time

October 2017: Ran nationwide 'Big Ireland Quiz' in conjunction with Muscular Dystrophy Ireland

 

 

 

History

 

The IQO was founded at a meeting in Buccaneers Rugby Club, Athlone, on Saturday, June 2, 2012.  The following committee was elected on that day:

 

Chairperson – David Fay (Dublin)

Secretary – John Nolan (Roscommon)

Treasurer – Micheál Coyne (Galway)

PRO – Michelle Walsh (Galway)

Competitions Officer – Paddy Duffy (Donegal) - replaced by Derek Cray (Dublin) in January 2013

Ordinary Committee Members (OCMs) – John O’Sullivan, Colm O’Sullivan and John Groarke (all Dublin)

 

Several iniatives were discussed at the inaugural meeting, including:

 

- The holding of seasonal quiz opens, presumably once per province, throughout the calendar year

- Restarting the All-Ireland table quiz championship, under the auspices of the IQO

- Endeavouring to send two teams of four to the European Quiz Championships, which take place in November

- Being available to assist quiz organisers throughout the country

 

 

The 2013 AGM was held in Dublin on 1st June 2013, and the committee elected was:

 

Chairperson - John Nolan

Secretary – Derek Cray

Treasurer – John Groarke

PRO – Colm O'Sullivan

Competitions Officer – John O'Sullivan

Ordinary Committee Members (OCMs) – Stuart Redmond, Gary Stephens, Daniel O'Malley, Kevin Jones and Lorcan Duff.

 

 

The 2014 AGM was held in Dublin on Saturday 6th June 2014, and the committee elected was:

Secretary & Vice Chairman – Derek Cray

Treasurer – John Groarke

Public Relations Officer – Gary Stephens

Competitions Officer – Dan O'Malley

Development Officer - Colm O'Sullivan
